Eni has signed a $1+ billion power purchase agreement with Commonwealth Fusion Systems to acquire clean energy from CFS's planned 400 MW ARC fusion power plant in Virginia, expected to be operational by the early 2030s. This deal, the second major offtake agreement for CFS in three months, strengthens a partnership dating back to 2018 when Eni became an early investor in CFS. While reflecting growing industry confidence in fusion energy's commercial potential, the plant still faces significant technical and financial challenges before achieving its timeline. The agreement aims to address increasing demand for clean energy, particularly from data centers, with CFS recently completing an $863 million funding round and partnering with Dominion Energy.
