Amazon is developing augmented reality (AR) glasses for consumers, internally codenamed "Jayhawk", according to a recent report from The Information. This marks Amazon’s notable move into the AR hardware space, setting the stage for direct competition with Meta in the consumer wearable technology market.
Amazon is reportedly targeting a rollout of the consumer AR glasses in late 2026 or early 2027. The delivery-driver version could debut as early as the second quarter of 2026, initially producing around 100,000 units for pilot deployment.
Amazon’s initiative puts it in direct competition with Meta, which is preparing to unveil a new version of its smart glasses at the annual Connect conference. Meta has previously partnered with well-known eyewear brands such as EssilorLuxottica’s Oakley and built on the success of its Ray-Ban Meta line, which has achieved substantial sales since launching in 2023.
Earlier efforts included specialized glasses for Amazon delivery drivers, providing navigational assistance via a discreet screen. While leveraging similar technology, the consumer-focused Jayhawk glasses are designed with aesthetics and daily lifestyle integration in mind.
