Meta plans fourth restructuring of AI efforts in six months, The Information reports

New Structure Targets Rapid AI Innovation

Meta Platforms Inc. is preparing for its fourth major shakeup of its artificial intelligence efforts within just six months, marking an aggressive quest to dominate the rapidly evolving AI landscape. According to sources cited by The Information, the company will break up its Superintelligence Labs unit into four distinct divisions, with the aim of accelerating decision-making and alleviating longstanding issues of redundancy.

Superintelligence Labs Reorganized Into Four Groups

The latest plan divides Superintelligence Labs into:
  • A new "TBD Lab" (short for 'to be determined'), focused on exploring emergent research areas
  • A products team, which includes the conversational Meta AI assistant
  • An infrastructure team dedicated to scaling up data and compute capabilities
  • The FAIR lab, maintaining a focus on long-term fundamental AI research

Massive Investments and Competitive Pressure

Meta's restructuring comes as part of CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s high-stakes push for developing artificial general intelligence — systems that can match or surpass human intellect. Company spending on AI infrastructure is expected to top $72 billion in 2025. This includes a major expansion of data center capacity, largely financed through industry partners like bond giant PIMCO and Blue Owl Capital, who are leading a $29 billion financing deal for a new Louisiana facility.

Challenges: Talent, Costs, and Product Reception

Meta’s rapid changes follow staff departures and unfavorable reviews of recent releases, including its latest open-source Llama 4 model. Poaching top researchers with high salaries has further fueled soaring compensation and infrastructure expenses, with company projections indicating that spending could rise even faster in 2026.

The Race for AI Superiority

With Silicon Valley rivals like ChatGPT maker OpenAI and Google's Gemini intensifying the contest, Meta’s relentless restructuring underscores the monumental stakes—and ambition—driving the next generation of artificial intelligence advances.
