OpenAI have unveiled a major collaboration to develop 4.5 gigawatts of new data center capacity in the United States as part of their joint venture, Stargate. This expansion brings OpenAI's total U.S. data center projects to over 5 gigawatts and positions the company well above its previously announced infrastructure targets[1][2][4].
Driving Economic Growth and Job Creation
The initiative is set to create more than 100,000 jobs across construction and operations. These roles include:
- Direct full-time data center operations jobs
- Specialized construction positions, such as electricians
- Indirect roles in manufacturing and local services
The current flagship Stargate I site in Abilene, Texas, is already operational in parts, with Oracle having delivered cutting-edge
Nvidia GB200 racks and
OpenAI beginning to run early AI training and inference workloads[1].
Acceleration Beyond Initial Investment Commitments
OpenAI initially pledged a $500 billion, 10-gigawatt U.S. AI infrastructure investment over four years, unveiled at a White House event in January 2025. Due to the success of projects like Stargate and growing partnerships with Oracle and SoftBank, OpenAI now anticipates surpassing these benchmarks[1].
Widespread Nationwide Expansion
Beyond Abilene, expansion sites for new data centers are under consideration in multiple states, including:
- Michigan
- Wisconsin
- Wyoming
- New Mexico
- Georgia
- Ohio
- Pennsylvania
Additional international campuses are also planned, including a Stargate facility in the United Arab Emirates in partnership with Oracle, Nvidia, Cisco, SoftBank, and G42[2].
Role of Cloud and AI Partners
While Oracle leads the construction and infrastructure,
Microsoft Azure will maintain a major role as OpenAI’s cloud provider. Partnerships also continue with
CoreWeave and
Google Cloud, giving OpenAI access to expanded computing resources and custom AI chips[2].
